Doorknob: A Playful Wall Mounted Key Holder

Doorknob stands out from other key holders with its unique design and functionality. It is a wall-mounted key holder that resembles a traditional doorknob. The designers, Denny Liao and Karen Han, wanted to create a practical solution for keeping keys organized while adding a playful element to home decor.

The Doorknob is available in two models. Model 001 is made of cast metal with a polished finish, while Model 002 is made of white plastic with a matte finish. Both models have a height of 6.7cm and a diameter of 5.6cm, making them compact and suitable for any wall space.

One of the key features of Doorknob is its ease of use. To mount it onto any wall surface, simply remove the liner from the mounting foam pad on the back of the knob. The key slot is designed to fit with the key-shaped keychain provided, as well as any generic house key. This intuitive design ensures that your keys are always within reach.

In addition to its key-holding function, the spherical knob of Doorknob doubles as a hook for coats and hats. This multi-purpose design makes it a practical and space-saving addition to any home.

The Doorknob project started in 2013 and was showcased at Fab's First Things First exhibition in their SoHo showroom in NYC during NYCXDesign in 2014. Since then, refinements have been ongoing to further enhance the design and functionality.

The designers conducted extensive research to ensure the usability and versatility of Doorknob. They examined common doorknobs and keys to find ways to accommodate different types of home keys. The key slot was carefully designed to fit various key shapes and sizes, allowing users to use the product without the designed keychain.

One of the challenges the designers faced was accommodating different key types. However, they discovered that the most commonly used key types are all very close in width and height. By designing the slot to fit the largest dimensions, all keys fit perfectly fine.

Doorknob has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Doorknob's strong technical characteristics and remarkable level of excellence make it a truly remarkable piece.
